Every night, I commute across the city to get home. It isn't a very long commute, but it involves bridges, rivers and tunnels.

A few nights ago, I snapped a pic because the road was pretty empty on my regular commuting hour. This is an sub-terrain highway that leads to the bridge.

Even the city in Pittsburgh doesn't feel very urban sometimes because it is nestled in a river valley. Green hills (except winter) and flowing rivers take the edge off the city. This area is one of the places where Pittsburgh can feel crowded and very urban.
There is something about a stone building. They seem to stand the test of time and evoke memories of the past. For me, the Allegheny County Courthouse and Jail stands a one of the most distinctive building ever erected in Pittsburgh.

It was designed in 1883 by renowned Boston architect, Henry Hobson Richardson. This picture includes the walkway between the Courthouse and the Jail called the "Bridge of Sighs."

There is something about that name that always evoked clear images of inmate walking their fate into the jail after being sentenced. The jail was moved to a larger more modern facility along the river in 1995, but the city has managed to re-purpose the building.Linda Nawrockihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14411982568398861615noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-337009190008287540.post-89571488258855058482014-01-09T14:56:00.000-05:002014-01-09T14:56:08.421-05:00Snowy Barn in Northeast Ohio

In December, I went on a Wine Tour with some friends. We go to a couple of places throughout the area East of Cleveland. Now, some of the wine is less than stellar, but the times are always good, if not great!

On this particular day, we went to a place called M Cellars. Not only was the wine great (I tested this theory by bringing it home, so thumbs up), but the tasting room and surrounding vineyard were incredible.

I stepped out onto the back deck to look at the surrounding fields, and noticed this barn. Nothing like a snowy day in rural Ohio drinking wine.Linda Nawrockihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14411982568398861615noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-337009190008287540.post-51630960515482829062014-01-07T17:38:00.001-05:002014-01-07T17:43:42.177-05:00How Rusted Root's Cruel Sun Still Shines for me Today

Shortly after I graduated from college in 1994, I moved to a neighborhood in Pittsburgh called the South Side. With a firm grasp on a temp job making $7.50/hour, I left my parents' house and found my own apartment.

This place was tiny. It was probably the size of my current open plan living /dining room. However, there were lots of great things about it. I was in a fun neighborhood and my friends visited all the time. I had a Christmas party with a REAL tree. My best friend, Lara, even stole the makeshift Elmo I had attached to the top of a tree with a gum band (For those outside of Pittsburgh - that is a rubber band).

This apartment was about Freedom. Freedom of being on my own. Even better, it had access to the fire escape / roof and there were 3 boys who lived across the hall. They were all culinary students and a lot of fun. If I am being honest, there were 2 boys who were great and one was kind of a grump. Nice enough, but grumpy.

This album - Cruel Sun by Rusted Root - takes me back to that time in such a vivid way with a very specific memory attached to it.

Almost every Tuesday, one of the boys, Harvey, and I would go out because it was the only night of the week he had off from the restaurant business. We would get 22 oz bottles of Rolling Rock for $2 at the bar around the corner. When we had sufficiently damaged our brain cells and livers, we would head home. Every time, we would end up in my apartment dancing to this CD. I am sure I tried to play other CDs, but Harvey would say "Put on Rusted Root." Every time, Harvey would fall asleep in my chair while I still boogied around.

Now I know what you are thinking - no Harvey was only ever a friend. No hand holding, no kissing, no shenanigans. Just good clean, Tuesday nights blowing off steam.

There is something so special about that apartment and time of my life. Fun was cheap because it was all we could afford. Pittsburgh wasn't cool, but everyone was making a go of it. Pasta was about all I could afford to eat. There was something about being young and striking out into the wilderness of life.

I lost touch with Harvey a few years after he moved out of Pittsburgh. He moved around; and I moved around. Without email, staying in touch during those days was harder. Although I constantly try to track him down. Apparently he is not a social media fan - which does not surprise me one bit.

The thing I realized when I put this CD in today, is that I will never really lose Harvey. When I was dancing around my apartment this morning, he was right there with me saying "How can this music not make you happy?"

You know what Harvey, like I always replied, "You got me on that one!"Linda Nawrockihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14411982568398861615noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-337009190008287540.post-15344746649117474072014-01-02T12:07:00.001-05:002014-01-02T12:12:02.659-05:00New Year Resolution - Jealous Again?

In the past, this blog has been a 'photo' blog that was started when I made a New Year Resolution to take a photo every day.

This year, I decided to take on a new resolution. I am going to start listening to my CDs - the whole thing. I am going to enjoy the artistry of the albums musicians make.

I figured, since the word 'noise' is in my blog name, music could and should be included.

I started the tradition during the Christmas holiday. However, my first album of the New Year was "Shake Your Money Maker" by The Black Crowes.

I had forgotten how amazing this album is. I love The Black Crowes and saw them this summer for the first time. Chris Robinson is like a music alien. I don't think he doesn't know how to love music and let it in his soul.

Money Maker is packed from end to end with amazing music. Every track is worth listening to - no skips here. From the rockin' Jealous Again and Hard to Handle to the heart breaking She Talks to Angels, dust this one off and listen from end to end. It will make your day better. Promise.

As I was walking to get coffee in the South Side, I strolled past this building.

First, I had never noticed this particular building before. Although I had lived in the South Side and work about 2 blocks from here, I must never had come down this street.

Second, I was immediately enamored with how it was decorated. There is something about the simple decorations that made this building seem like something out of a Christmas past and a bygone area.

Love it! I am pretty fortunate that I live near a hiking trail in the middle of the city. The Mt. Washington /Duquesne Heights area of Pittsburgh has a sprinkling of trails all along the mountain side.

On this morning, it had snowed overnight when I left, so I grabbed my phone. I usually don't take it with me when I go for a walk because it is my time to unplug. I am so glad I did it on the morning. Nothing more beautiful than a lush snow-covered trail.Linda Nawrockihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14411982568398861615noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-337009190008287540.post-56565539429721507222013-12-14T13:22:00.003-05:002013-12-14T13:30:48.806-05:00Thoughts on a Baseball Season

Along with everyone else in Pittsburgh, I have been thinking a lot about the Pirates and why these 20 seasons have stung so much. Sometimes, you just know that you are better than the score on the board at the end of the game.

You work hard. You hone your talent. Heck, you are better than 98% of the people who play the same sport (or have the same job, want the same goal), but you can't seem to make it happen.

Last night at PNC Park, the Pirates reminded me of a saying PSU running Coach Harry Groves had - "Don't let the Bastards beat you down."

Season after season, the Pirates resolve seemed to vanish into thin air no matter how much momentum they had. But, last night, the Pirates stood firm as if they summoned strength from the pure desire to show everyone the metal they were made of - like the steel that used to roll off the production line across the river from where the park stands!

It is a moment in time to watch, but somehow it feels like it isn't just the Pirates. It is Pittsburgh. It is our moment in time when we are telling the world about the kind of city we are, the kind of people we are and why Pittsburgh is one of the best places on the planet.

Like the saying goes, character is not built in the good times, it shows through hard times & adversity. If we have nothing else, we have character, n'at. Walking out of the park to the buzzing streets, I wanted to say "This is My City. I am a Pittsburgher!"

I don't have a crystal ball to predict the outcome of the season, but I am going to hold this feeling because . . . You know, it feels so good!Linda Nawrockihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14411982568398861615noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-337009190008287540.post-72034779963445694542013-07-03T16:27:00.001-04:002013-07-03T16:27:53.723-04:00Patinaed Laurel Wreath

I own a store called Urban Cottage. It is directly across the street from two cemeteries. One of the cemeteries is called Allegheny Cemetery. It is a very old and very large cemetery. I thought I would document some of the tombs and carvings of the cemetery that are beautiful.

This photo is the first in a series of those photos. This patina on the beautiful relief inset in the door is wonderful. The detail of the laurel wreath in this carving and iron work is incredible.Linda Nawrockihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14411982568398861615noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-337009190008287540.post-58576836240972605042012-06-06T21:57:00.000-04:002012-06-06T21:57:49.464-04:00Clipper Boat on the Ohio River

After a concert in Point State Park, I decided to walk home via the Fort Pitt Bridge. There is a great pedestrian walkway that goes from the Park right to the Duquesne Incline.

While I was walking home, a clipper boat came down the river and a train was coming in the distance. One of my favorite things to do when I am in New Orleans is to get up early (generally, I am slightly exhausted) and wander around the French Quarter. I walk different street and get to enjoy the amazing architecture of the quarter. I have shot many photos of New Orleans over the years.

I love the weather look of some of these cottages. The thing that amazes me is that behind these shutters is generally a different world. Lush and amazing apartments are hidden by these time tested wooden cottage shutters.

There were a couple of cottages that I shot that day, but I loved this one best. Ironcially, the color photo isn't that different, but I think the black and white really makes the patina show in this picture.Linda Nawrockihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14411982568398861615noreply@blogger.com01208 Bourbon St, New Orleans, LA 70116, USA29.9627795 -90.061901929.96106 -90.06436939999999 29.964499 -90.0594344tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-337009190008287540.post-77268107561367260592012-04-15T18:31:00.002-04:002012-04-15T18:31:50.779-04:00Budweiser Lawn Jockey

Sometimes the people in Pittsburgh can be a little bit ridiculous. Or course, you could always see times where things are teetering between brilliant and ludicrous. When I saw this lawn jockey in the South Side, I wasn't sure which one it was. Just to be safe, I ventured into the wreck of a yard and got a close up photo.
I am not sure if this is ridiculous because the lawn jockey is holding a beer can, or if it is brilliant because they turned a half-wrecked lawn jockey into a piece of art.
I guess art is in the eye of the beholder, and it will be up to you to decide. Today, I am leaning more toward art!Linda Nawrockihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14411982568398861615noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-337009190008287540.post-7728578587466953672012-04-11T08:11:00.000-04:002012-04-11T08:11:00.848-04:00Waffle House Condiments

You have the basic salt and paper, sugar and ketchup. The rest of the time, it is a total crap shoot the other stuff they will put on the table. Sometimes you might see malt vinegar, sometimes you might have mustard. The occasional joint might have hot sauce.

At the Waffle House, they don't like to mess around. They put it all on the table. If you don't see it there, it probably doesn't exist or needs refridgerated.
I have nothing bad to say about the Waffle House because breakfast there with your honey is nothing but yummy goodness, and should always be followed up with a nap.Linda Nawrockihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14411982568398861615noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-337009190008287540.post-21446618329583585242012-04-10T08:14:00.000-04:002012-04-10T08:14:00.780-04:00Owl Bet You Love It!

Owls. They are popping up more and more places in the fashion world. Heck, I even seems to see more garden ornaments with owls. Do you think I am crazy? I am not the only one who is talking about how owls are making a resurgence in fashion and pop culture (and the Chicago Trib as well).

When I was walking home from work in the South Side yesterday, I noticed the local coffee shop has caught onto the owl crazy. I thought it was a great sign. Cheezy marketing at its best, but the picture was so kitschy and cute, it made me want to stop in. (I was trying to beat a wicked storm, so it had to wait).
Owls . . who who will be spotted next?Linda Nawrockihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14411982568398861615noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-337009190008287540.post-70478408052062679962012-04-05T15:20:00.001-04:002012-04-05T15:20:55.264-04:00Getting Into Art at The Mattress Factory

I went to an art opening at the Mattress Factory over the weekend. It featured works from many different artist. This artist didn't put anything into the room, but took things away, such as pieces of ceiling and walls. In this picture, he cut out part of the plaster board (most likely installed for the event). People were really getting "into" it - both literally and figuratively.
It was interesting to watch a succession of people react to someone going in there, and deciding to try it out for themselves.Linda Nawrockihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14411982568398861615noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-337009190008287540.post-6384326767433143182012-04-02T08:50:00.000-04:002012-04-03T14:57:41.080-04:00Balloons on the Wire

It is an exhibit that features a series of artists with pieces installed throughout the annex location of the Mattress Factory.

When we first arrived at the opening, a large group of people was doing a release of red balloons. I am assuming it was related to the piece that allowed patrons to write their wishes on balloons. As we made our way upstairs, I looked out of the window and realized some of the balloons had been tangled on the wire. Stranded dreams, I suppose.
Linda Nawrockihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14411982568398861615noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-337009190008287540.post-52293138428082675272012-03-30T09:29:00.001-04:002012-03-30T09:29:45.556-04:00Enlightenment in Mt. Instead of taking my normal route down Grandview Avenue, I walked through the back part of my neighborhood on one of the other main street. After I had stopped at the store, I was walking home and noticed this statue.

I have driven past this statue hundreds of time since it is a main street to get through Mt. Washington. It was interesting that is wonderful statue was perched outside of the Rite Aid.
According to the plaque, the statue by Eugenio Pedon is called enlightenment. Apparently, this 'lady of stone' was rescued from top the entrance of the old post office building on Smithfield Street (1889 - 1966).
Like any other farmer's market, there were lots of fresh fruits and vegetables at really affordable prices. I picked up some limes, asparagus and some of these yummy green beans.

I am lucky enough to have a great view from my apartment. The most obvious thing is the Pittsburgh Skyline. However, there is a great statue outside my window on Grandview Avenue of George Washington and Seneca Tribe leader Guyasuta.

It is a place tourists often come for the overlook, but also to see the statue after dining at local restaurants. The intensity of the statues and their crouched position. It really represents the early history of the area and the importance Pittsburgh had in the foundation of the United States as a young country.Linda Nawrockihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14411982568398861615noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-337009190008287540.post-42162458779147406302012-03-21T15:24:00.001-04:002012-03-21T15:27:27.472-04:00The Han Solo Effect

Let's just say that I am fan of Star Wars. The first one came out when I was pretty little, but like most people who were young at the time, it captured our imagination. When I was really little, I had a crush on Luke Skywalker . . . yes it was the scene where he swings himself and Leia to safety
However, when the Empire Strikes back came out, I was old enough to realized the Han was the loveable rouge. Yes, he is the guy all women chase and secretly hope will be like the hero we see in the movie.
The other day, I was in Target and noticed this Han Solo bobble head. It is pretty much the best $5 I ever spent. He is perched on my desk giving me great inspiration every day.
"Uh, we had a slight weapons malfunction, but uh... everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here now, thank you. How are you? "
At any rate, I did a little test of my new cell phone app - no it is not instagram because I have a droid. I do think it does capture the many moods of my favorite space hero!
Linda Nawrockihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14411982568398861615noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-337009190008287540.post-34930961648813639752012-03-08T08:03:00.001-05:002012-03-08T08:03:03.758-05:00Winter Sky on the River

Since the days are longer and the weather is warmer, I have started to go to work on foot. I walk to the Mon Incline and hop a bus into work. As I was walking through the dusky morning, I noticed how beautiful the city was.

The sky was still winter grey, but the translucent light was casting some interesting shadows on the the city and on the river.
I crossed the street to snap a picture with my phone. The color photo didn't really capture what I wanted, but turning to black and white really brought the bridges to life.Linda Nawrockihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14411982568398861615noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-337009190008287540.post-63544265128785585962012-02-24T08:38:00.002-05:002012-02-24T08:38:20.154-05:00Celtic Cross at a Galway Cemetery

One of the things that amazes me about Ireland is Celtic design. They are so intricate. If you have ever tried to replicate one, you will quickly realize most of them are difficult and very mathematical.

I visited an old Graveyard right on the outskirts of the city. It had been pointed out to me when I was on a previous bus trip and I had been wanting to go back there for awhile. I was totally blown away by how many Celtic crosses there were. It was the standard for a headstone a hundred years ago. The graveyard was littered with them.

This Celtic cross in particular was of a HUGE scale in comparison with the other. It also had cravings on all four sides, indicating it is more expensive. Modern crosses often only have the face carved.

Due to the position and scale of this cross, I was able to shoot it with the cemetery chapel in the background. It also shows that it is a modern graveyard because there are standard slab headstones, some very recent, in the background.Linda Nawrockihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14411982568398861615noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-337009190008287540.post-76078902695150804182012-02-22T14:59:00.001-05:002012-02-22T14:59:30.665-05:00Claddagh Boats in Galway Harbor

On my recent trip to Ireland, I went back to Galway. It is one of my favorite cities, and looks like what a Tourist 'thinks' an Irish city should be.

Another of the cool aspect of Galway is that the small town of Claddagh is there. Yes, the famous Claddagh ring was conceived there for poor fisherman and their wives.

When I was walking around the harbor, I noticed a series of row boats tied to the shore. This one especially caught my eye. While I was in the Philadelphia airport last week, I walked past this replica of the Liberty Bell. The best part of it was that it was made of Lego. I grabbed my camera and snapped a shot.
